Clive Lloyd captained West Indies from 1974 to 1985 and during that period assembled and led the most dominant cricket team the world has ever seen. Tall, bespectacled, a powerful left-handed batsman and an exceptional cover fielder in his prime, Lloyd also shaped West Indian cricket culture — building an identity around pace bowling, athletic fielding, and an uncompromising will to win. Under his leadership, West Indies won the first two Cricket World Cups and went 27 consecutive Test series without defeat.

The 1975 World Cup — Clive Lloyd's Finest Hour

The first Cricket World Cup was held in England in 1975. West Indies met Australia in the final at Lord's on June 21. Lloyd walked in at 50/3 and made 102 from 85 balls — at that time, probably the most destructive innings ever played in a Lord's final. West Indies won by 17 runs, and the trophy was hoisted by the tall Guyanese captain in what became one of cricket's defining images. West Indies retained the title in 1979, also against England at Lord's.

Building the Pace Battery

Lloyd's lasting strategic contribution to cricket was his deliberate decision, after Australia outpaced West Indies in 1975-76 using Lillee and Thomson, to build a four-pronged pace attack that could sustain pressure across all conditions. He identified Roberts, Holding, Garner, and Marshall — and later Ambrose and Walsh — as the foundation of West Indies' supremacy. This was not a temporary measure but a long-term strategic plan that kept West Indies at the top of Test cricket for fifteen years.

Batting Record

Lloyd scored 7,515 runs in 110 Tests at 46.67 — an exceptional record for a number five in an era when pitches were less prepared and covering was less consistent. His powerful hitting, especially through the covers where he used his exceptional reach and timing, made him one of the most intimidating stroke-makers of his era. He reached 19 Test centuries and remains one of West Indies' highest Test run-scorers.
