How does cricket coaching work at elite level — what do head coaches, batting coaches, and bowling coaches do, and how has coaching evolved in modern cricket?
Modern international cricket teams have extensive coaching staff who work with players on technical skills, tactics, fitness, and mental preparation. The head coach oversees the entire team's strategy and culture; specialist coaches develop individual skills; analysts track data and create game plans; and fielding and fitness coaches ensure players are physically prepared. The role of coaching at international level has expanded enormously since the 1990s.
The Head Coach
The head coach is the most senior member of the support staff, responsible for team selection advice, overall strategy, player development programmes, and team culture. Head coaches work closely with the captain — the best head coach/captain partnerships (Mike Brearley/Bob Willis, Ravi Shastri/Virat Kohli, Brendon McCullum/Ben Stokes) have produced exceptional Test teams. The head coach typically selects team composition in consultation with the captain and a national selection committee.
Specialist Coaches

Modern teams employ video analysts and data scientists who create detailed dossiers on opposing players. Before a series, bowlers receive heat maps showing where a particular batsman scores, where they are dismissed, and what deliveries trouble them. Batsmen receive information on bowler patterns — where they pitch, their go-to wicket-taking delivery, and what they bowl in different match phases. The data revolution has made cricket preparation more systematic at elite level than ever before.
