Courtney Walsh: West Indies' Record Wicket-Taker

Courtney Andreece Walsh played 132 Tests for West Indies between 1984 and 2001, taking 519 wickets at an average of 24.44 — making him the first bowler ever to take 500 Test wickets. At the time of his retirement, Walsh held the world record for most Test wickets, later surpassed by Glenn McGrath, Shane Warne, Muttiah Muralitharan, and Anil Kumble.

Endurance and Fitness

Walsh was famous for his ability to bowl long spells at high pace without visible fatigue. He played Test cricket for 17 years — an extraordinary run for a pace bowler — and maintained his effectiveness well into his 30s. His action was smooth, repeatable, and rarely caused injury.

Sportsmanship at the 1987 World Cup

Walsh is also remembered for a famous act of sportsmanship. In the 1987 World Cup, with Pakistan needing a six off the last ball to win and Abdul Qadir the batter, Walsh had the choice to run out the non-striker Saleem Jaffar who had wandered out of his ground. Walsh refused to attempt the dismissal, bowling instead to Qadir, who was bowled. Pakistan were eliminated by West Indies on this occasion — but Walsh's choice was celebrated as a defining act of cricketing honour.

Legacy

Walsh served as West Indies captain for over 20 Tests and brought stability during a difficult transitional period. His partnership with Curtly Ambrose sustained West Indian bowling as the team rebuilt after their dominant 1980s era. Walsh was inducted into the ICC Hall of Fame in 2010.
