Where Is Deep Mid-Wicket?

Deep mid-wicket stands on the leg side of the pitch at roughly 45°–60° from the line of the stumps, near the boundary rope, approximately 55–65 metres from the bat. It is the deep version of mid-wicket (inner ring). In modern cricket it is one of the two or three most-targeted zones on the field — the pull shot, the sweep, and the slog sweep all angle toward deep mid-wicket.

Why Deep Mid-Wicket Matters More Than Any Other Boundary Position

Right-handed batters' most powerful stroke — the pull or slog over mid-wicket — consistently targets the deep mid-wicket boundary. Data from T20 tournaments shows that more sixes land in the deep mid-wicket arc than in any other single boundary zone. The position therefore sees more high catches, more rope situations, and more ground balls than long-on, long-off or deep square leg combined.

Deep Mid-Wicket and the Rope

Close rope catches at deep mid-wicket are common because batters are deliberately targeting that zone. The fielder must patrol the rope with good awareness of their feet, dive inside the line for balls below knee height, and leap to take catches above their head while ensuring they do not step over the boundary. The standard 'boundary catch' — leaping, releasing the ball before touching the rope, then returning to complete the catch — occurs here more than anywhere else.
