Dew in Cricket: How Overnight Moisture Changes the Game
Evening dew is one of cricket's most misunderstood variables. It makes the ball slippery, stops spinners from gripping it, and often determines the outcome of T20 and ODI matches played under lights. Why teams choose to bat first when dew is forecast and how captains plan around it.
What Is Dew in Cricket?
Dew is moisture that forms on grass surfaces as temperature drops in the evening — water vapour in the air condenses onto the cooler outfield and pitch surfaces. In cricket played under lights or into the evening, dew begins to form in the second half of a match, typically from around 7-8pm local time in subcontinental and tropical venues. The moisture saturates the outfield and pitch surface and transfers to the cricket ball as fielders retrieve it. Once the ball is wet, its behaviour changes significantly: swing bowling becomes harder to produce (the seam gets soft and slippery), the ball loses its shine faster, and the leather surface becomes harder to grip for spin bowlers.
Impact on Spin Bowling
Dew affects spin bowling most severely. A spinner relies on finger contact with the seam to generate revolutions; a wet ball slips out of fingers differently, reducing the rate of spin imparted. Leg-spinners who need a firm grip to bowl the googly and flipper find that the wet ball makes these variations almost impossible to control. Off-spinners similarly lose the sharp rip that makes their stock ball effective. In the IPL — played in Indian cities where April and May evenings bring significant dew — captains bowling leg-spin in the second innings regularly report that the ball simply will not grip. This is the primary tactical reason teams often choose to bat second in T20 matches where dew is forecast: the opposition's spinners will face conditions their fast bowlers do not.
The Toss and Dew
At venues significantly affected by dew — Wankhede in Mumbai, Eden Gardens in Kolkata, Dubai — winning the toss and selecting to bowl first is sometimes considered the automatic choice in T20 cricket. The team batting second faces a wet ball that spinners cannot control and fast bowlers also find harder to swing; the outfield is slower because wet grass resists the ball's slide. The team bowling second, however, faces precisely the conditions that make bowling hardest. This is why IPL franchise captains place enormous value on the toss in evening games, and why the same toss advantage is less significant in Test cricket — dew dissipates overnight and Test innings span multiple days.
Why DLS Does Not Account for Dew
The Duckworth-Lewis-Stern (DLS) method for calculating targets in rain-affected matches does not include dew as a variable in its formula. DLS adjusts for overs lost due to weather interruptions and assumes both teams have broadly equivalent conditions. In practice, when dew transforms a second-innings T20 chase from bowling-friendly to batting-friendly, the DLS target remains unchanged — the system cannot account for conditions that change mid-match without a weather interruption. This creates genuine unfairness in some matches: a team set 160 off 20 overs on a dry outfield is in a very different situation from a team set 160 off 20 overs with the outfield saturated by dew. Cricket's governing bodies have noted the issue but found no algorithmic solution.
Managing Dew: Captain's Perspective
Experienced T20 captains at dew-affected venues use their bowling resources accordingly. Fast bowlers are often held back for the dew-affected periods because pace is less affected by moisture than spin; a seam bowler who relies on swing rather than grip is less impacted than a finger-spinner. Spinners may be used heavily in the first few overs before dew sets in — exhausting their overs early — or saved as containing options with a full complement of fielders inside the circle during the powerplay. In the IPL specifically, the dew timetable is well-understood and franchise coaches plan overs deployment partly around the expected onset of dew at each particular venue.
