What Is the DLS Par Score?

The par score is the DLS (Duckworth-Lewis-Stern) method's calculation of how many runs the team batting second needs to score to win or tie a rain-affected match. When rain interrupts a limited-overs match and reduces the overs available, DLS recalculates the target using both the overs remaining and the wickets remaining. If the team batting second reaches the par score at any point when play is abandoned, they win; below par, they lose.

The Resource Percentage

DLS works by quantifying 'resources' — the combination of overs and wickets available to a team. At the start of a 50-over innings with all 10 wickets, a team has 100% of resources. As overs are used or wickets fall, the resource percentage decreases. The DLS method tables show precisely what resource percentage remains for every combination of overs and wickets. Comparing resource percentages between the two innings allows a fair revised target to be calculated.

DLS replaced the original D/L (Duckworth-Lewis) method. The Stern update in 2014 recalibrated the resource tables for modern high-scoring cricket — the original method was calibrated in the 1990s when ODI run rates were lower.

How the Par Score Is Calculated

If Team 1 bats 50 overs with 100% resources and scores 280, and Team 2's innings is interrupted at the 20-over mark with 6 wickets remaining, DLS calculates what Team 2's remaining resources are as a percentage of what Team 1 had. If Team 2 had 45% of resources remaining when play stopped, their target is proportionally recalculated from Team 1's score. If Team 2 is reduced to fewer overs than Team 1, a G50 average score adjustment also applies.

Why Par Score Matters in the Match

In broadcast coverage, the par score is shown as a live, updating number during the chase. If rain falls and no further play is possible, the team ahead of par wins. This creates tactical situations: the fielding side may want rain to fall when the batting team is behind par; the batting team may push aggressively to get ahead of par. Knowing the par score at every stage of the chase is essential for strategic shot selection by the batting team.

Critics argue that DLS can produce targets that appear unachievable or too easy in unusual circumstances — for example, when one team loses their best batters very early and rain stops play.
