What Is a Double Century?

A double century (or double-hundred) in Test cricket is a score of 200 or more runs by a batter in a single innings. It is the elite batting milestone above the standard century — a mark of a truly exceptional innings that dominates a bowling attack for two or more full days of a Test match. Most great Test batters score one or two double centuries in their careers; scoring multiple is a mark of all-time greatness.

Why Double Centuries Are Special

A century requires a batter to sustain concentration for roughly 100–200 balls. A double century requires sustaining it for 200–400 balls — often across two sessions or two days. The mental fortitude required to convert a century into a double century is considered one of the hardest challenges in batting. Brian Lara has described the 200–300 range as the hardest stretch — concentration lapses after reaching the 'comfort' of a century, and boredom becomes a genuine risk.

Double Centuries in Limited-Overs Cricket

Double centuries in ODI cricket are extremely rare because 200 balls is the approximate maximum available to a batter, and scoring 200 requires consistently high strike rates throughout. Rohit Sharma holds the record for the most ODI double centuries (3), including the highest ODI score of 264 against Sri Lanka in 2014. No T20 player has scored a double century because the format does not provide enough overs.
