Drop-In Pitches in Cricket: How They Work and Why They're Controversial

A drop-in pitch is a cricket pitch prepared at a specialist nursery location and physically transported to the stadium on a pallet or flatbed, then lowered by crane into a prepared cavity in the ground. The concept emerged in Australia in the 1970s as a solution for stadiums that host multiple sports on the same surface.
Why Drop-In Pitches Were Developed
Grounds like the MCG and Adelaide Oval host AFL football for most of the Australian calendar. AFL matches chew up pitches dramatically — heavy boots on natural turf create extensive damage. Traditional cricket pitches prepared in situ would be destroyed by football use. Drop-in pitches allow the ground to serve both sports: cricket pitches are grown off-site over months and installed only for cricket fixtures, then removed and stored for next season.
How a Drop-In Pitch Is Made
A drop-in pitch takes 10–12 months to grow and prepare. It begins as a layer of soil mix in a steel or concrete tray, which is seeded with the specific grass variety (typically couch or Santa Ana couch). The grass is grown, watered, rolled, and mown with the same care as an in-situ pitch. Several pitches grow simultaneously so the curator can choose the best one for a given match. Once prepared, the pitch is transported — sometimes by helicopter for remote grounds — and lowered into a cavity left in the stadium's playing surface.
The Controversy
Drop-in pitches are controversial because they produce different and arguably less interesting cricket than traditional pitches. Critics argue they tend to be too consistent (neither helping spinners nor fast bowlers enough) and don't deteriorate as dramatically over five days as traditional pitches. Several memorable Test matches at the MCG have produced low-scoring draws on predictable drop-in surfaces. Traditionalists prefer the character of pitches prepared in situ, which reflect local soil, weather, and grass.
Other Grounds Using Drop-In Pitches
Beyond Australia, drop-in pitches have been used at Eden Park (Auckland, NZ), the 2012 Old Trafford (redevelopment period), and various neutral-venue T20 tournaments. The 2016 T20 World Cup in India saw drop-in pitches rejected — India preferred in-situ preparation tailored for spin. The technology is most advanced in Australia, where it has been refined over 40 years.
