Cricket Equipment Through the Ages: Bats, Balls, and Protection

Cricket's equipment has always been in tension between traditionalism and innovation. The Laws specify dimensions but not materials — creating a space where manufacturers can engineer advantage within nominal constraints. The result, over 250 years, has been equipment that looks superficially similar to its ancestors but performs in radically different ways.

The Bat: From Curved to Power

The earliest cricket bats were curved, resembling a wide hockey stick — designed to hit a ball bowled along the ground. When overarm and round-arm bowling elevated the ball's trajectory, bat design changed to the straight, upright blade that persists today. By the Victorian era, bats had roughly their modern proportions: flat face, slight ridge on the back, thin handle of cane and rubber. The significant modern change came after the 1990s: edges widened substantially (from 25–28mm in the 1970s to 35–40mm now), and the 'sweet spot' — the area of maximum resilience — was moved lower and larger. These engineering changes are within the Laws' dimensional limits but produce more power.

The Ball: Kookaburra, Dukes, SG

Three cricket balls are used in international cricket, each with different characteristics. The Dukes ball (used in England and West Indies) has pronounced raised seam, swings in the air longer, and is considered the optimal ball for swing bowling. The Kookaburra (Australia, South Africa, New Zealand, most of Asia) has a flatter seam, swings less, and deteriorates more quickly — leading to more reverse swing in later innings. The SG ball (India) has a higher seam than Kookaburra but behaves differently from Dukes. These differences mean that bowling attacks suited to one ball type may struggle with another — a significant factor in home vs away performance differences.

The cricket ball's red colour for Tests comes from the combination of cherry-red leather and layers of wax/lacquer applied during manufacture. The white ball used in limited-overs cricket was introduced by Kerry Packer's World Series Cricket in 1977 for visibility under floodlights. Pink balls, used in day-night Tests from 2015, behave differently from both — swinging more in the early evening and deteriorating faster.

Protective Gear: From Nothing to Full Coverage

Victorian batsmen wore no helmets and minimal padding. Batting against genuine fast bowling in the 1880s meant accepting physical risk as part of the sport. Leg guards (pads) developed through the 19th century; batting gloves became standard by the early 20th. The helmet arrived in the 1970s: Dennis Amiss of England first wore one in first-class cricket in 1977 (a modified motorcycle crash helmet) after touring the West Indies. By the 1980s, helmets were near-universal for batsmen facing fast bowling. Modern helmets include face guards, neck guards, and temple protection, manufactured to British Standard BS7928 — a cricket-specific safety certification introduced in 2009.

The Stumps and Bails

Cricket stumps are specified by the Laws at 28 inches high and collectively 9 inches wide (three stumps), with bails resting in grooves at the top. For most of cricket's history, they were simple wood. Modern TV stumps contain embedded LED lights and cameras: the 'Zing bails' used in major international cricket light up when dislodged — providing television viewers and third umpires with clear confirmation that a wicket has fallen. The embedded camera in stumps captures previously impossible footage: genuine stump-eye-view of deliveries approaching the batsman, or replays from directly behind a bowler's arm.

Technology and Law: The Boundaries

The Laws constrain equipment dimensions — bat must be max 38 inches long, blade max 4.25 inches wide — but cannot easily constrain materials within those dimensions. The 'bat gauge' introduced in 2017 checks edge thickness (max 40mm) and bat depth (max 67mm) — a response to power bats that were producing exceptional sixes from mishits. The balance between equipment innovation and competitive integrity remains an ongoing negotiation between manufacturers, boards, and the MCC.
