The run-up is the fast bowler's acceleration phase — the approach to the crease that generates the momentum needed for a high-speed delivery. Unlike other athletes who generate power from standing, a fast bowler converts forward momentum from their run into rotational energy through their action. Getting the run-up right is the difference between 120 km/h and 145 km/h.

Marking the Run-Up

Fast bowlers mark their run-up precisely using a marker (usually a small cone or a scratch in the turf at their starting point) and then count paces to the crease. They find their 'trigger point' — the last footfall before the delivery stride — and ensure they arrive at the crease with maximum momentum from a particular foot. Different bowlers bowl off different feet: Brett Lee bowled off his left foot, James Anderson off his right.

The Delivery Stride

The delivery stride is the most important part of the run-up. As the bowler approaches the crease, they jump (the 'bound') into the delivery position — rotating their body from side-on to front-on. The back foot lands parallel to the crease, the front foot lands behind the crease line. Overstepping this line produces a no-ball — something bowlers must practise obsessively to avoid, especially with a longer run-up at full pace.

Finding your run-up length: start from the crease and run away from it as you would in your approach, counting paces until you naturally reach your comfortable starting position. Mark it. Then bowl from there, adjusting 1–2 paces at a time until you consistently land the front foot correctly behind the crease.

Rhythm and the Mental Side of the Run-Up

Pace bowlers often talk about 'feeling their run-up' — when everything feels rhythmical and natural, the ball comes out at maximum pace. A disrupted run-up (interrupted by a bad surface, mental distraction, or instruction from a captain) can lower pace by 5–10 km/h. Elite bowlers practise maintaining consistent run-ups through 100+ deliveries in a spell to build the muscle memory that survives match pressure.
