Feroz Shah Kotla (Arun Jaitley Stadium): Delhi's Cricket Fortress

Arun Jaitley Stadium — widely known by its historic name Feroz Shah Kotla — is Delhi's primary cricket venue and one of India's oldest Test grounds. Named after the ruined medieval fortress adjacent to it in old Delhi, it hosted its first Test in 1948 and has been the scene of some of Indian cricket's most dramatic moments, most famously Anil Kumble's ten-wicket haul in February 1999.

History and Background

The Delhi & District Cricket Association (DDCA) has administered the ground since the 1930s. The venue was renamed Arun Jaitley Stadium in 2019 in honour of the former finance minister and cricket administrator — though supporters and commentators continue to use the Feroz Shah Kotla name. The ground sits in central Delhi near Connaught Place, surrounded by the ruins of Firoz Shah Kotla fort, a 14th-century structure that gives the venue its historic character.

The Pitch: Spin Above All

Feroz Shah Kotla pitches are heavily engineered to favour spin from an early stage. Delhi's soil composition and the DDCA's preparation methods create surfaces that turn significantly from day two, making the Kotla one of the most challenging venues for batting sides without quality spin-players. The dry, cracked pitches are particularly helpful to off-spin — left-arm orthodox spin creates difficult angles, and finger spinners can make the ball leap from good length.

Anil Kumble's 10 Wickets in an Innings — 1999

The most celebrated performance in Kotla history — and one of the rarest achievements in cricket history — came on 7 February 1999. India leg-spinner Anil Kumble took all ten wickets in Pakistan's second innings, becoming only the second bowler in Test history to achieve the feat (Jim Laker being the first, in 1956). Kumble finished with 10/74 off 26.3 overs in Pakistan's second innings as India won the Test by 212 runs. He completed the ten-for despite bowling with a broken jaw, held together by bandaging.

Pakistan second innings: all out 207. Kumble: 26.3-9-74-10. His victims included Shahid Afridi, Inzamam-ul-Haq, Wasim Akram, and Saqlain Mushtaq. The tenth wicket — Wasim Akram — was caught by Rahul Dravid at slip. The crowd erupted. Kumble embraced his teammates with a bandaged jaw after bowling 26 overs in discomfort.

Other Famous Moments

In 1987, India defeated the West Indies at Kotla in a historic series result. The ground has also hosted memorable ODI victories for India. Virender Sehwag — Delhi's most celebrated cricket son — made his debut at the ground and represented it with fierce devotion throughout his career. Sehwag's aggressive, ultra-attacking batting style was the antithesis of Kotla's careful spin-friendly surfaces, but he thrived regardless.

Delhi Capitals and IPL

In the IPL era, Arun Jaitley Stadium is the home of the Delhi Capitals franchise (formerly Delhi Daredevils). IPL matches at the ground draw large crowds from Delhi's enormous population base. The spinning pitch character has proved challenging for Twenty20 cricket, where big hitting is expected — occasionally the pitch turns so severely that spinners dominate even T20 matches.

Stadium Design and Atmosphere

The ground holds approximately 41,000 spectators and is enclosed by stands that create a noisy, pressured atmosphere for visiting teams. Delhi's summer cricket can be played in temperatures exceeding 40°C, adding physical duress to technical challenges. The Pavilion Block — containing dressing rooms and media facilities — dates from the 1960s modernisation and retains a period character unlike the newer stands erected in recent decades.

Renovation and Modern Facilities

Significant redevelopment works from 2018 onward upgraded seating, media boxes, and player facilities to match international standards. The DDCA invested heavily in drainage systems to reduce rain delays and improve outfield quality. The Delhi government's involvement in cricket administration has periodically created friction with the BCCI, but the ground's Test status has never been threatened.
