The Science of Field Placement: How Captains Set Fields

Field placement in cricket is a blend of data analysis, psychology, and experience. Here is how captains decide where to place 9 fielders, how that changes by batsman, and what modern analytics have added.

The Captain's Primary Tool

Of all the decisions a cricket captain makes during a match, field placement occupies the greatest proportion of their mental energy. A captain places fielders before every over, potentially adjusting between deliveries, responding to where the batting side scores, and anticipating where a batsman is likely to hit the next ball. With nine fielders to position across an oval of roughly 150 metres diameter, and a batsman who can hit the ball to approximately 360 degrees around them, the field is always a compromise between attack and defence.

The Attacking Field

An attacking field clusters fielders close to the bat in catching positions — slips, gullies, short leg, silly mid-off — at the cost of leaving boundaries less guarded. An attacking field makes sense when a bowler is bowling with movement, when a batsman is uncomfortable, or when a wicket is badly needed. The risk is obvious: a loose delivery leaks four runs to the boundary where a fielder has been removed. The calculation is always: do I think the bowler will get a wicket more than I think they will bowl the odd poor delivery?

The Defensive Field

A defensive field protects the boundary, reduces the frequency of four-and-six balls, and accepts that the batsman will score singles. It makes sense late in a match when defending a small total, when a particular batsman is in exceptional form, or in the final overs of a T20 match where containment rather than wickets is the immediate priority. A well-set defensive field in T20 cricket — using the field restrictions correctly, placing boundary riders in the right positions — can reduce an acceptable T20 target by 20-30 runs in the powerplay.

Matchup Data: The Modern Revolution

Modern field placement is increasingly informed by data analysis. CricViz, Hawk-Eye, and team analytics departments produce wagon-wheel analysis — showing where a particular batsman scores the majority of their runs — for every international player. A captain who knows that Batsman X scores 60% of their runs through midwicket will place more fielders on that arc when that batsman is at the crease. The data also shows which bowler-batsman matchups are unfavourable, allowing captains to rotate strike or use bowlers in specific orders.

Psychological Aspects

Field placement has a psychological dimension that data cannot fully capture. A close-in fielder at silly mid-on — standing three metres from the bat — creates physical and psychological pressure. The batsman must be aware of them. Some batsmen are more susceptible to the crowded-field pressure than others. Conversely, leaving a gap deliberately — placing no mid-off, for instance — can invite a batsman to try a shot they are not fully comfortable with, creating a false shot and an edge. The great captains, from Benaud to Steve Waugh to Dhoni, were as skilled at reading the psychology of the field as its geometry.

The Captain-Bowler Partnership

Field placement in practice is a negotiation between captain and bowler. A captain proposes a field; the bowler may request adjustments based on what they plan to bowl. If a fast bowler intends to bowl a bouncer, they may ask for a fine leg positioned further square. If a spinner intends to bowl outside off stump to a specific batsman, they may want a deep backward point rather than a cover. The best captain-bowler partnerships develop an almost unspoken shorthand: a glance, a small gesture, and the field adjusts without words.
