The Long-Off Position

Long-off is positioned approximately straight from the pitch on the off side — at roughly 175-185 degrees from the leg-side direction — on or near the boundary at 60-70 metres from the stumps: long-off is one of cricket's most consistently used boundary positions because the straight off-drive is one of the most common attacking shots — when a batsman hits straight, the ball is approximately equally likely to go to long-on or long-off depending on the exact angle; the specific angle of the straight drive relative to the pitch determines which of the two positions receives the ball; and long-off is positioned for drives hit fractionally to the off side of straight (between mid-off and straight) while long-on covers drives hit fractionally to the leg side of straight. Long-Off vs Long-On: Key Differences

Long-off catches are among cricket's most technically challenging: the ball arrives from a lofted straight drive — typically from very high trajectory (the ball goes up steeply and comes down near the boundary); the fielder must track the ball from the moment it leaves the bat (reading the trajectory from the bat face angle and the height of the hit); the sun presents a specific challenge — long-off in the afternoon session often faces directly into the sun as the over is bowled from the opposite end; and the pressure of the catch location (on the boundary — the fielder must stay inside the rope while catching, otherwise it is a six) adds a specific boundary-awareness element to the catch that doesn't exist for slip or mid-on catches. Long-off catches that require the fielder to move backward — catching a ball that travels toward the boundary and would go for six if the fielder doesn't reach it — are technically the hardest category of outfield catches.
