What Is a Five-Wicket Haul?

A five-wicket haul — commonly called a fifer — is when a bowler takes five or more wickets in a single innings of a cricket match. It is the bowling equivalent of a batting century: a landmark individual performance that is singled out in records, career summaries, and historical rankings. In Test cricket, five-wicket hauls are rare enough that they are considered a mark of genuine bowling excellence; a bowler who averages one fifer every four or five Tests across a career is considered very good.

Significance in Test Cricket

In Test cricket, a five-wicket haul often determines the outcome of a match. If a team can bowl the opposition out for under 200 on a challenging pitch, it typically begins with a bowler taking five or more wickets to create a collapse. The all-time Test five-wicket haul record is held by Muttiah Muralitharan with 67 fifers in 133 Tests — a rate of more than one per two Tests. Shane Warne took 37 in 145 Tests. James Anderson and Anil Kumble both exceeded 30. Among fast bowlers, Glenn McGrath (29), Dale Steyn (26), and Wasim Akram (25) are the record holders.

Five-Wicket Hauls in Limited-Overs Cricket

In ODI cricket, five-wicket hauls are even rarer because bowlers receive only 10 overs each — fewer opportunities than in Tests. When a bowler takes five wickets in an ODI, it typically produces a below-par score from the opposition and is celebrated as the equivalent of a match-winning innings. In T20 cricket, five-wicket hauls are extremely unusual — a bowler has only four overs — but they do occur, particularly from spinners on turning pitches where batters may attack recklessly. Taking all ten wickets in an innings (a ten-wicket haul) has occurred in Tests but is one of the rarest feats in cricket.
