The ICC Men's Cricket Super League (2020-2023) was the qualification pathway for the 2023 ICC Men's Cricket World Cup. It replaced an ad-hoc qualification format with a structured points-based competition that gave every ODI-playing nation a realistic path to the sport's biggest tournament.

How the Super League Worked

Thirteen teams participated: the 12 Test-playing nations plus the Netherlands (representing the associate nations). Each team played eight three-match series — four at home, four away — against randomly assigned opponents from the pool. In each series, teams earned 10 points for a win and 0 for a loss in each ODI. At the conclusion of all fixtures, the top eight teams directly qualified for the 2023 World Cup. The bottom five entered a World Cup Qualifier playoff.

Why It Was Created

Before the Super League, ODI bilateral series outside of tournaments had limited consequence. Teams would play series primarily for TV revenue and rankings points, but with no meaningful qualification stakes. The Super League gave every bilateral ODI result concrete significance — a loss in a home series to Afghanistan could have real World Cup consequences. This made the entire ODI calendar more purposeful and increased audience interest in matches that previously attracted little attention.

Results and Surprises

The Super League produced several notable results. West Indies — a two-time World Cup winner — failed to qualify automatically through the Super League and were forced into the Qualifier. Zimbabwe — not a top-tier ODI nation — had competitive results across the competition. India, England, New Zealand, Australia, and Pakistan were among the highest-ranked finishers. The format demonstrated that associate and lower-tier nations were closing the gap on Full Member nations in the 50-over format.

The Format After 2023

Following the 2023 World Cup cycle, the ICC adjusted the qualification pathway for the 2027 ODI World Cup. The Super League format in its exact form was not retained, with the ICC instead using updated qualifying structures that incorporate more teams and consider the expanded 2027 tournament. The Super League's legacy was demonstrating that a points-based bilateral qualification pathway is more compelling and fairer than tournament-only qualification.
