Rain Rules in Cricket — From Net Run Rate to DLS Method

Cricket has always struggled with rain. A five-day Test can lose an entire day to weather; a 50-over match can be reduced to 25 overs per side with ten minutes of drizzle. For most of the sport's history, determining fair outcomes in rain-affected matches relied on crude systems that produced obviously unfair results. The development of the Duckworth-Lewis method in 1997 — updated to the Duckworth-Lewis-Stern (DLS) method in 2015 — finally gave cricket a mathematically defensible rain rule.

Early Approaches

Before DLS, the most common rain rule was 'highest scoring overs.' If the chasing team's innings was reduced by rain, the target was recalculated by removing the bowling team's lowest-scoring overs from their total — the assumption being these were the easiest overs to score in. This was deeply flawed because the bowling team's lowest-scoring overs were often their most attacking overs with new ball; removing them inflated the target unfairly and rewarded the bowling team for good bowling.

The 1992 World Cup Disaster

The 1992 Cricket World Cup semi-final between England and South Africa produced the most egregious example of a flawed rain rule. South Africa needed 22 runs off 13 balls to win. Rain stopped play for 12 minutes. When play resumed, the most-run-scoring over calculation (which in this case was incorrectly applied) reduced the requirement to 22 runs off one ball — physically impossible. South Africa were effectively eliminated by rain rather than cricket. The incident catalysed the search for a better system.

England statistician Frank Duckworth and Tony Lewis developed their method in the mid-1990s, first used in international cricket in a Zimbabwe vs England ODI in January 1997. It worked without controversy.

How DLS Improved Things

The Duckworth-Lewis method recognised that runs available is a function of both overs remaining and wickets in hand — not just overs. A team with 10 wickets and 20 overs has far more resources than a team with 2 wickets and 20 overs. The model calculates a 'par score' for any point in a match based on historical scoring data and adjusts the target proportionally when overs are lost. It was adopted by the ICC in 1999 and updated with Steve Stern's refinements in 2015 to better account for T20 and high-scoring conditions.

Ongoing Controversies

Even DLS has critics. In very high-scoring T20 matches, the model occasionally produces targets that seem too low for the chasing team. The method works by reference to historical average scoring rates, which can lag behind the scoring explosion in modern T20 cricket. Various refinements have been proposed, and the ICC continues to update the method's tables periodically. Despite its critics, DLS is universally accepted as far superior to any predecessor.
