Greenidge and Haynes: West Indies' Greatest Opening Partnership

Gordon Greenidge and Desmond Haynes are the most celebrated opening pair in West Indies cricket history and among the finest openers the game has ever seen. They batted together in 148 Test innings from 1978 to 1991, sharing 16 century stands and putting on 6,482 runs together — the highest partnership total for any opening pair in Test cricket at the time.

Gordon Greenidge

Greenidge was born in Barbados but raised in England, playing county cricket for Hampshire. He was a powerful, attacking opener whose hook shot and square cut were signature weapons. His most celebrated innings came in the 1984 Lord's Test against England — he scored 214* on the final day to set a run chase, West Indies winning by 9 wickets as he guided them home after England had made 300+ in their 4th innings.

Desmond Haynes

Haynes was the more orthodox of the pair — a reliable, patient Barbadian opener who could rotate strike and accumulate while giving Greenidge licence to attack. He scored 7,487 Test runs in 116 Tests at 42.29, with 18 centuries. In ODIs, Haynes was exceptional — he averaged over 40 and his experience was crucial in West Indies' early one-day dominance.

Partnership Records

Their 298 partnership against England at St John's in Antigua in 1990 remains one of the highest opening stands in Test history. Together they set the template for what modern aggressive opening was — decades before the batting powerplays formalised the role.
