The cricket pitch is the 22-yard strip of ground between the two sets of stumps, and its condition is the most important variable in any cricket match. A green, moisture-filled pitch aids fast bowlers; a dry, crumbling pitch produces turn for spinners; a flat, hard pitch gives batters confidence to play drives and cuts. Reading the pitch before each session is a key tactical skill.

Green Top

A pitch with significant grass covering. The grass provides extra friction and pace for fast bowlers, creating lateral seam movement and variable bounce. Green tops favour fast bowling attacks and are most common in England, New Zealand, and South Africa. Flat (Dead) Pitch
