Ian Botham then struck 149 not out in an extraordinary counter-attacking innings. Bob Willis followed with 8 wickets for 43 as Australia, needing just 130 to win, collapsed. England won by 18 runs — one of the most improbable victories in cricket history.

Stokes's 2019 Miracle

In the 2019 Ashes series, another Headingley moment for the ages: Ben Stokes scored 135 not out — including a last-wicket partnership with Jack Leach (1 not out, 17 overs faced) — to chase down a target of 359 against Australia. England won by 1 wicket. The final over, with Stokes dispatching Cummins for sixes and fours, was watched around the world. A second consecutive unbelievable Headingley Ashes match.
