Imran Khan: Pakistan's World Cup Captain

Imran Khan Niazi played international cricket for Pakistan from 1971 to 1992. His career statistics — 362 Test wickets at 22.81, 3,807 Test runs at 37.69 — place him among the five greatest all-rounders in Test history. As captain, he transformed Pakistani cricket culture: demanding fitness, discipline, and self-belief from players who had been underperforming relative to their talent.

Early Career and Prime

In his prime from the late 1970s to mid-1980s, Imran was genuinely fast — 140+ kph — with exceptional outswing and late reverse. He was also one of the few bowlers who could take wickets on subcontinental pitches with pace alone. His batting developed steadily: he was used as a number eight in his early career, but by 1982 he was batting at six and seven and contributing substantial lower-order runs.

1987 Lahore Hat-Trick

In the first Test against Sri Lanka in Lahore in 1987, Imran took a hat-trick — three wickets in three balls. He dismissed Ashanta de Mel, Ravi Ratnayeke, and Saliya Ahangama to complete what was only the fifth hat-trick in Test cricket at that time. It came in a match Pakistan needed to win to set up the series, and was celebrated as a reminder of Imran's bowling artistry at 34 years old.

1992 World Cup: Cornered Tigers

Imran returned from injury to lead Pakistan in the 1992 World Cup. After early defeats that left Pakistan on the edge of elimination, his pre-match speech — 'fight like cornered tigers' — became a cricket rallying cry. Pakistan won their remaining games. In the final against England, Imran scored 72 from 110 balls, setting up a defendable total that Wasim Akram's two deliveries sealed. Imran lifted the trophy aged 39.

Post-Cricket Career

After retirement, Imran founded the Shaukat Khanum Memorial Cancer Hospital in Lahore, financed in part by his cricket celebrity. He entered politics and became Prime Minister of Pakistan from 2018 to 2022. His political career generated significant controversy. However, his cricketing legacy — as the man who gave Pakistan self-belief and won them their first and only ODI World Cup — remains intact in the memories of a generation of Pakistani fans.
