Cricket in Nepal — The Himalayan Nation's Rapid Rise

Nepal is one of the most remarkable stories in Associate cricket. A landlocked Himalayan nation with limited resources and infrastructure, Nepal nonetheless rose through the ICC's regional pathway to qualify for the 2014 ICC World T20 — their first major global event — and have since become one of the strongest Associate nations in Asia.

History of Cricket in Nepal

Cricket came to Nepal through Gurkha soldiers who encountered the game while serving in the British Indian Army. The Cricket Association of Nepal (CAN) was founded in 1946, though the sport remained informal and village-level for decades. ICC Associate Member status was granted in 1988, and Nepal gradually developed their domestic league structure through the 1990s and 2000s.

Rise on the World Stage

Nepal's international breakthrough came in the 2014 ICC World Twenty20 in Bangladesh, where they qualified from the Associate/Affiliate pathway. Though they did not advance from the group stage, the exposure to international competition accelerated development. They have since featured in multiple T20 World Cup editions.
