The Inside-Out Drive: Playing Over Extra Cover Against Spin

What the inside-out drive is, how batters use it to hit over extra cover against off-spin and left-arm spin, and why it requires exceptional timing.

The inside-out drive is one of T20 cricket's most elegant and demanding shots. The batter moves their front foot ACROSS toward the leg side, creating room on the off side, then drives through the ball over extra cover or long off. The shot is 'inside-out' because the batter moves inward (leg-side) before hitting outward (off-side direction).

Why Play It?

The inside-out drive is particularly effective against off-spinners bowling into the stumps. An off-spinner turning the ball into a right-hander's body is difficult to drive through the covers conventionally (the ball turns into the bat). By moving across and opening the body to the off side, the batter can drive the turning ball over extra cover or long off — areas the spinner has no fielder.

Technique

The key is foot movement — the front foot moves toward the leg stump, creating width on the off side. The batter then drives outward through the ball, hitting it toward extra cover or over long off. The shot requires exceptional timing because the batter is at an unusual angle to the ball. A mistimed inside-out drive often skies the ball to deep extra cover.

Famous Users

Sachin Tendulkar's inside-out drive over extra cover was one of his most memorable shots. Virat Kohli uses it regularly against left-arm orthodox spinners. MS Dhoni deployed it as a specific weapon to score against spinners bowling wide of off stump — the shot turns 'untouchable' deliveries into boundary opportunities.

The inside-out drive requires a high bat backlift pointing toward the leg side — the opposite direction from where the ball will travel. Getting the backlift right sets up the outward drive path. Coaches teach it by asking batters to imagine they are throwing the bat in a wide arc from inside-to-outside.

Frequently asked questions

What is the inside-out drive in cricket?

The inside-out drive involves moving the front foot across toward the leg side (creating space), then driving the ball through or over the off side — extra cover or long off direction. It is 'inside-out' because the foot movement is inward (leg side) while the shot goes outward (off side). Used against off-spin to hit over areas spinners don't expect.

When should I play the inside-out drive?

Play the inside-out drive when: an off-spinner or left-arm spinner is bowling into the stumps with no fielder at long off or extra cover, the ball is full enough to drive, and you are comfortable with the foot movement required. It is more effective in T20 where the off-side boundary is reachable.

What is the risk of the inside-out drive?

A mistimed inside-out drive often skies the ball to deep extra cover or long off — a specialist fielder in those positions can take a straightforward catch. The timing window is narrower than a conventional drive because the batter is not in their natural stance. The shot requires practice and confidence before deploying in high-pressure situations.
