Inside-Out Shot in Cricket — White-Ball Batting's Most Elegant Lofted Drive

The inside-out shot is a lofted off-side drive played to a delivery on middle or leg stump — the batter moves across to the off side in their stance and hits against the natural line of the delivery, sending the ball over extra cover or long-off. It reverses the conventional logic of 'play the ball where it is pitched' and is a signature stroke in modern white-ball batting.

How the inside-out shot works

Against a mid-on or mid-wicket field, a ball on middle-and-leg should logically go toward mid-on or mid-wicket. The inside-out shot exploits an over-stacked leg side by moving the front foot across — effectively getting inside the line of the ball — so that the ball's contact point with the bat is on the inside edge of its arc. The bat face is then angled to direct the ball over extra cover or the off side, where the field is empty. The result is a lofted boundary to an unguarded part of the ground.

Field exploitation

In powerplay overs, when only two fielders are allowed outside the circle, the captain often stacks the leg side (deep mid-wicket, fine leg) to protect against the pull and sweep. The inside-out shot is the answer: it sends a mid-stump delivery over the vacant long-off or over extra cover. Captains who move mid-off and extra cover in to stop the inside-out shot then leave themselves exposed to the conventional straight drive and lofted drive over mid-on.

Technical requirements

A successful inside-out shot requires: a front-foot stride that moves across to the off side (rather than toward the pitch of the ball as in a conventional drive), a very open bat face at the point of contact, and strong hands to generate height and carry over the infield. The timing window is narrow — played too early, the ball goes straight; played too late, the ball goes to mid-off rather than extra cover. Against spin, the batter uses the turn to their advantage: an off-spinner turning away from a right-hander provides exactly the kind of flight that enables this shot.
