What Is the Inside-Out Shot?

The inside-out shot — sometimes called the inside-out drive — is a batting stroke where the batter moves their front foot across toward leg stump (getting 'inside' the ball) and drives a ball that is on or around off stump over extra cover or long-off in the air. The result is a ball that curves from leg stump line to the off-side boundary — opposite to what the bowler expects.

Footwork and Execution

1. Read the length early — this shot works best on a half-volley or a full delivery.
2. Move the front foot across toward leg stump — getting 'inside' the line of the ball.
3. Open your stance as you do so, facing toward extra cover rather than the bowler.
4. Drive through the ball with an open bat face aimed at extra cover or long-off.
5. The ball starts on leg stump line and curves away to the off side in the air.

Why It Is Devastating in T20

Offspinners and left-arm orthodox bowlers are most vulnerable. They aim at middle or off stump with fielders on the leg side — mid-on, mid-wicket, and square leg protect the on side. The inside-out shot sends the ball to the off side, where long-off may be the only fielder. It also disrupts the bowler's plan and forces captains to reset the field mid-over.

Risks

• Mistiming sends a straight catch to long-off.
• Bowler reads the movement and bowls a slower ball — the batter hits too early.
• A ball that doesn't fully fill the bat-swing — toe-end miscue goes to cover.

Difference From the Cover Drive

A cover drive plays a ball outside off stump with feet moving toward the pitch of the ball — orthodox. The inside-out shot moves feet toward leg stump to hit a ball on or inside off stump toward the off side — unorthodox. The inside-out creates a bigger arc and more aerial carry.
