Delhi Capitals, Punjab Kings, and Lucknow Super Giants: IPL Franchise Histories
The stories of three IPL franchises — Delhi Capitals, Punjab Kings, and Lucknow Super Giants — their identity, near-misses, and notable players.
Delhi Capitals
Delhi Capitals — originally Delhi Daredevils — are one of the IPL's founding eight franchises (2008). They reached their first final in 2020 (under the Capitals rebrand), losing to Mumbai Indians. Captain Rishabh Pant became the franchise's icon through explosive wicketkeeper-batting that propelled them to top-two finishes. Delhi have produced multiple India Test players: Shikhar Dhawan, Virender Sehwag, Ashish Nehra (coaching), and Rishabh Pant all carry strong Delhi cricket DNA.
Punjab Kings
Punjab Kings (originally Kings XI Punjab, then KXIP) are one of the IPL's most frustrating stories — finishing second in 2014 but never winning the title despite several squad overhauls. They have attracted superstars: Chris Gayle played some of his finest IPL cricket for KXIP (his 175* came in KXIP colours). In 2024 and 2025, under Shikhar Dhawan's captaincy and then Sam Curran, Punjab Kings rebuilt around young Indian talent including Prabhsimran Singh and Shashank Singh.
Lucknow Super Giants
Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) joined the IPL in 2022 as one of two expansion franchises alongside Gujarat Titans. Owned by RPSG Group (the same owners as Rising Pune Supergiant), they built their team around KL Rahul's captaincy and consistent batting. LSG reached the playoffs in both their first and second seasons — a remarkable debut record. Their diverse squad included Nicholas Pooran, Quinton de Kock, and Mark Wood at different stages.
Three Teams, Different Identities
These three franchises represent different archetypes: Delhi Capitals (perennial underachievers who finally reached a final), Punjab Kings (glamorous but unfortunate), and Lucknow Super Giants (disciplined new entrants who punched above their weight). Together with GT, they rounded out the IPL to 10 teams — creating the first fully national coverage of India's cricket market.
