IPL Explained — How the Indian Premier League Works
What the IPL is, how the franchise T20 tournament works, the points system, playoffs format, and why the IPL is the world's most valuable cricket league.
The Indian Premier League (IPL) is the world's richest and most-watched T20 cricket franchise tournament. Founded in 2008 by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), it runs annually in April-May and features ten city-based franchise teams. The IPL's combination of elite international players, Bollywood glamour, and prime-time broadcasting has made it the second most-attended sports league in the world by average attendance.
The Ten Franchises
The current ten IPL franchises: Chennai Super Kings (CSK), Mumbai Indians (MI), Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), Delhi Capitals (DC), Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH), Punjab Kings (PBKS), Rajasthan Royals (RR), Gujarat Titans (GT, joined 2022), Lucknow Super Giants (LSG, joined 2022). Mumbai Indians have the most IPL titles (5); Chennai Super Kings have 5 as well. KKR has 3. Rajasthan Royals won the inaugural 2008 edition.
The League Stage Format
Each team plays 14 league matches — one home and one away against each other team, using a single home and away round-robin. Points: 2 for a win, 0 for a loss, 1 for a no-result. The top four teams at the end of the 70-match league stage progress to the playoffs. If teams are level on points, Net Run Rate (NRR) is the tiebreaker.
The Playoffs
The IPL playoffs use a four-team format: Qualifier 1 (1st vs 2nd) — winner goes directly to the final; Eliminator (3rd vs 4th) — loser is eliminated; Qualifier 2 (Qualifier 1 loser vs Eliminator winner) — winner reaches the final. Final: the winners of Qualifier 1 and Qualifier 2 compete for the IPL title. This system gives the top two teams two chances to reach the final, and the bottom two only one chance.
Why the IPL Is Financially Dominant
The IPL's 2023 five-year media rights deal was sold for USD 6.2 billion — the highest per-match value in cricket history, exceeding the English Premier League's per-match media value. Star India (digital streaming) and Viacom18 (television) split the rights. Franchise valuations exceed USD 1 billion for established teams. The IPL is estimated to contribute around 11% of India's entire sports industry GDP.
