Cricket has been played in Ireland since the 18th century and was once one of the country's most popular sports. At the height of British rule, cricket thrived across the island. The sport's fortunes declined after Irish independence in 1922, as Gaelic games assumed cultural primacy. Cricket survived in the background, particularly in the island's northern provinces, until a revival beginning in the late 20th century.

World Cup Upsets

Ireland made cricket's global headlines at the 2007 ODI World Cup when they defeated Pakistan in a famous upset, with Kevin O'Brien scoring one of the fastest World Cup centuries to chase down the target. At the 2011 World Cup, Ireland pulled off another stunning win against England, with Kevin O'Brien again the hero. These results demonstrated that Ireland was ready for the highest level of cricket.

Test Status in 2018

Ireland was granted ICC Full Member status in June 2017 and played their inaugural Test match against Pakistan in Malahide, Dublin in May 2018. In their second Test — played against England at Lord's in July 2019 — Ireland produced one of cricket's great upsets by bowling England out for 85 in their first innings and winning by four wickets. Victory at Lord's was a moment of immense national pride.

Ireland continues to develop its cricket infrastructure, with Malahide becoming a permanent Test venue and the establishment of professional domestic contracts for leading Irish players. The challenge for Ireland is maintaining Test competitiveness while also developing the depth of talent needed to be a genuine Test force rather than occasional giant-killers.
