Jasprit Bumrah's Yorker: The Most Lethal Death Bowling in Cricket

Jasprit Bumrah's yorker is widely rated the most difficult delivery to face in modern white-ball cricket. Delivered from an unusual slingy, side-on action with a low release point, Bumrah's yorker arrives late, swings in at high pace, and lands precisely in the blockhole — giving batters almost no time to adjust.

The Action

Bumrah's bowling action is genuinely unique. He approaches the crease with a short run-up, then coils his body in a chest-on position before releasing the ball from close to the body at an unusually low and round-arm angle. This 'slingy' action is difficult for batters to track — the ball appears later in the delivery stride than with a conventional high-arm action.

The Yorker

Bumrah bowls full-length yorkers that land precisely in the blockhole — the gap between the batter's bat and the crease line. At 140-145 km/h (87-90 mph), these deliveries combine pace, accuracy, and late inswing. He can bowl them at will on both sides of the stumps and can change from a slower bouncer to a yorker mid-spell to prevent batters setting up. In high-pressure death overs of T20s, his economy rate is among the very lowest at this pace.

Test Cricket Excellence

While most celebrated in white-ball cricket, Bumrah is equally dangerous in Tests. He generates sharp reverse swing with the old ball and can produce unplayable deliveries on English pitches. He was named the ICC Test Cricketer of the Year in 2023 and 2024 and led India's bowling attack in the 2024 Border-Gavaskar Trophy.
