Brian Lara: The Prince of Port of Spain and His Record-Breaking Career

Brian Charles Lara is one of cricket's most gifted and charismatic batters, widely considered the greatest left-handed batter of all time. Born in Trinidad in 1969, Lara played Test cricket for the West Indies from 1990 to 2006, scoring 11,953 Test runs at an average of 52.88. He holds the records for both the highest individual Test innings and the highest individual first-class innings ever played.

In April 1994, Lara broke Garfield Sobers' 36-year-old record of 365 not out, scoring 375 against England in Antigua. Matthew Maynard was the fielder who caught the boundary that brought up the record. A decade later, in the same ground against the same opponents, Lara took the record back from Matthew Hayden (who had scored 380 in 2003) with an unbeaten 400. Both innings displayed his extraordinary concentration and strokeplay.

501 Not Out

In June 1994 — just months after the Test record — Lara scored 501 not out for Warwickshire against Durham in a County Championship match. He batted for 7 hours and 54 minutes, hitting 62 fours and 10 sixes. It remains the highest score in any form of first-class cricket and is likely to stand as a permanent record.

Playing Style

Lara was renowned for his distinctive high backlift and flamboyant stroke play, particularly his cover drive and square cut. He played with a freedom and flair that embodied the Caribbean spirit of cricket.
