Shane Warne: The Greatest Leg-Spinner in Cricket History

Shane Keith Warne is widely regarded as the greatest leg-spin bowler and one of the greatest cricketers of all time. The Australian right-arm leg-spinner played 145 Tests for Australia between 1992 and 2007, taking 708 wickets at an average of 25.41 — figures that defined an era and transformed how the world viewed spin bowling.

The Ball of the Century

On 4 June 1993 at Old Trafford, Warne bowled Mike Gatting with what became immortalised as the 'Ball of the Century'. It was only Warne's second delivery in an Ashes Test. The ball pitched outside leg stump, turned sharply, and clipped the top of off stump. Gatting stood rooted to the spot in disbelief. The delivery announced Warne to the world and is still replayed more than 30 years later.

Warne was the dominant figure in Australian Ashes victories throughout the 1990s and 2000s. He took 195 Ashes wickets — the most by any bowler in Ashes history — and played a central role in Australia's period of dominance over England. He was almost unplayable on any pitch offering even slight assistance to turn.

Legacy

Warne was named one of Wisden's Five Cricketers of the Century in 2000 — the only specialist bowler on the list alongside Bradman, Sobers, Hutton, and Viv Richards. He passed away in March 2022, aged 52, and tributes poured in from across the cricketing world. Australia renamed the Great Southern Stand at the MCG the Shane Warne Stand in his honour.
