England bowled New Zealand out in 27 overs; Frank Tyson and Brian Statham combined for 9 wickets; not a single New Zealand batsman reached double figures (Beard made 9, the top score). The pitch was not described as extreme by contemporary reports; English spectators present recalled a normal Auckland surface — modest pace, some grass. The explanation was primarily psychological: New Zealand cricket in 1955 was in its infancy, and the English attack of Tyson (the fastest bowler in the world at the time) and Statham (the most accurate) was beyond their experience.

South Africa 30, India 36: The Modern Extremes

South Africa's 30 against England at Edgbaston in 1924 was, for 97 years, the second-lowest total in Test history. Then India matched it in 2020: bowled out for 36 by Australia at Adelaide, their second innings on a damp but not extreme pitch where Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood exploited overhead conditions and a ball that swung and seamed for the first 30 minutes. India's 36 all out lasted 21.2 overs. Virat Kohli made 4; eight batsmen failed to reach double figures. Both collapses occurred against the same team at stages of West Indian fast bowling dominance. Both reflected the same structural vulnerability: when conditions favour swing and seam significantly, England's batting technique — reliant on the front-foot press to counter swing — breaks down if the first two or three wickets fall quickly. New Zealand's 26 was in one innings of a lost Test in a lost series — but New Zealand survived as a Test nation. The lows exist as statistical extremes within series where the overall balance was different. The only genuine disaster: South Africa's 30 in 1924 came in a series they lost 3–0 — a result that reflected the gap between Test cricket's then-established nations and South Africa's relative inexperience.
