What Is the Mandatory Powerplay?
The mandatory powerplay is the compulsory fielding restriction period at the start of each innings in limited-overs cricket — overs 1–10 in ODIs and overs 1–6 in T20s. During this phase, the fielding side can have no more than 2 fielders outside the 30-yard circle.

Why Are There Mandatory Powerplays?
The powerplay was introduced to encourage attacking batting and ensure spectators see more boundaries in the early overs. Without fielding restrictions, captains could stack the outfield to prevent boundaries — making batting too difficult and the game too defensive.
Minimum Inside Ring Requirements
During a mandatory powerplay, the fielding side must maintain at least 2 fielders in catching positions within the inner ring (within 30 yards of the pitch). This prevents teams from placing all fielders deep even within the allowed restriction.
Penalty for Violation
If a fielding side places more than the allowed number of fielders outside the circle, the umpire will call a No Ball. This awards the batting side an extra run and a free hit on the next delivery — a significant penalty that keeps teams disciplined about field placements.
T20 Powerplay Field Setting
Overs 1–6: The captain sets 2 slips, a gully, mid-on, mid-off, square leg, and fine leg. Only fine leg and a deep midwicket (if deployed) are outside the circle — within the 2-fielder limit. Any more outside the circle would trigger a no-ball.
