Lyon was working as a curator at Adelaide Oval when he came to the attention of South Australian selectors through club cricket. He made his Test debut in August 2011 at just 23 years old against Sri Lanka in Pallekele. He took a wicket on his very first delivery in Test cricket — an immediate signal of his potential. Known as 'GOAT' (Greatest Of All Time, though self-deprecatingly applied) and 'Gary' (a nickname that stuck from early in his career), Lyon quickly became indispensable to Australia's attack.

Career Statistics and Milestones

Nathan Lyon passed 500 Test wickets in 2023, becoming only the fifth bowler in history to reach that milestone and Australia's leading wicket-taker among spinners. He took his 100th wicket in 27 Tests (extremely fast for a spinner), his 200th in 50 Tests, and continued at a consistent pace of approximately 4-5 wickets per Test throughout his career. His wickets have come on all types of surfaces — he is not purely a home pitch specialist, having taken important wickets in Asia, England, and South Africa.

The 2021-22 Ashes: Gabba Heroics

Lyon's greatest moment came in the first Test of the 2021-22 Ashes at the Gabba, Brisbane. With England collapsing in their second innings, Lyon took 4/91 in the second innings and 7 wickets for the match. Australia won by 9 wickets to set the tone for a 4-0 series. His bowling at Brisbane in 2021-22 demonstrated his mastery of home conditions — extracting turn from a pitch that appeared to offer little, through variations in pace, flight, and angle.

Lyon's Batting: An Unlikely Contribution

Lyon is not considered a batter, but he has played several crucial innings from No. 11. Most famously, in the 2018 Durban Test against South Africa, Lyon had the chance to hit the winning run in the final over and was run out going for the second run — Australia lost by 3 wickets instead of winning. The moment was one of cricket's most agonising near-misses. Lyon handled the aftermath with remarkable grace, never complaining about the run out decision.
