Pace bowling is the art of hurrying batsmen with speed, swing, seam, and bounce. A fast bowler's goal is simple — deliver the ball so quickly and deceptively that the batsman cannot play a controlled shot. Achieving that requires mastering five linked fundamentals.
1. The Run-Up
The run-up generates the momentum that transfers into ball speed. Most pace bowlers use a run-up between 15 and 35 paces. The approach should be rhythmical — starting slowly and building to maximum pace at the delivery stride. A jerky or uneven run-up disrupts timing and costs pace.
2. The Gather and Bound
The 'gather' is the coiling of energy just before delivery — the bowler plants the back foot and loads the body. A bound (small jump) often precedes delivery to re-centre momentum and align the hips. The bound must not overstep the bowling crease on landing.
3. The Delivery Stride
The front foot lands close to the crease without overstepping. The body rotates powerfully from side-on to face-on. A strong bracing front leg converts angular momentum into pace. A collapsing front leg absorbs energy and reduces ball speed significantly.
4. Release and Grip
The ball is held with the seam upright between the index and middle fingers for conventional seam bowling. At release the wrist should be behind the ball — the hand drives through and the fingers push past the seam to maintain upright seam position for swing and seam movement.
5. Follow-Through
The follow-through prevents injury by gradually decelerating the arm. The arm should swing naturally across the body after release. Running off the pitch in the follow-through is illegal — the bowler must veer away from the popping crease area on the pitch.
