Pace Bowling Techniques — Swing, Seam, Reverse Swing, and Cut
How fast bowlers make the ball move: outswing, inswing, seam movement off the pitch, reverse swing, and off-cutter. The mechanics behind pace bowling's deadliest tools.
Swing Bowling
Swing bowling exploits the aerodynamics of the cricket ball in flight. The ball's seam and the differential condition of its two sides (one shiny, one rough after wear) create asymmetric airflow. The smooth side generates lift while the rough side generates drag — causing the ball to curve through the air. Outswing moves away from a right-handed batter; inswing moves in towards them.
The Seam Position
For swing to work, the seam must be positioned vertically. When the seam holds upright, it acts as a rudder, directing airflow asymmetrically. Bowlers hold the ball with two fingers on top of the seam and the thumb underneath — the upright seam is maintained through a consistent wrist position at the point of release. Atmospheric humidity enhances swing; the moisture helps the air attach to the smooth side more completely.
Seam Movement
Seam movement (or 'cutting') is lateral deviation after the ball lands. When the ball's seam strikes the pitch at the right angle, it grips the surface and angles away — either to the off side (off-seam) or the leg side (leg-seam). This is distinct from swing: seam movement is off the pitch, swing is through the air. A ball that both swings in the air and seams off the pitch ('does a bit of everything') is the hardest to play.
Reverse Swing
Reverse swing occurs with an old ball (typically 35+ overs old in international cricket). As the ball deteriorates, it begins to swing in the opposite direction to conventional swing — hence 'reverse'. The old, roughed-up side must be kept dry (no saliva or sweat, which was later banned anyway) while the smooth side is polished. Reverse swing catches batters off guard because they are conditioned to expect conventional movement direction.
Off-Cutter and Leg-Cutter
Cutters are variations in which the bowler cuts their fingers across the seam at release to generate off-spin (off-cutter) or leg-spin (leg-cutter) movement off the pitch, at medium pace. The off-cutter moves from off to leg; the leg-cutter moves from leg to off. At pace, these deliveries look like normal fast bowling until they deviate sharply off the surface — catching batters who have committed to a false line.

At what pace does swing stop working?
Swing is most effective at 75–90 mph. Below that range the ball doesn't have enough speed to create the aerodynamic differential effectively. Above about 92–95 mph, pace bowlers often find the ball goes through too quickly to swing significantly — at extreme pace, seam movement replaces swing as the primary wicket-taking tool.
Why did ball-polishing with saliva get banned?
The ICC banned saliva on the ball in 2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic (as a health measure) and made the ban permanent in 2022. Saliva was used to keep one side of the ball shiny — which helps swing — by regularly applying it and buffing the surface. Teams must now use sweat only, which is less effective at generating shine.
What is 'bowling dry' in cricket?
Bowling dry refers to keeping the non-shiny side of the ball completely dry by deliberately not applying any moisture. This is the key to generating reverse swing — if the dry, rough side is kept bone dry and the smooth side is kept shiny, the differential between the two sides is maximised, producing reverse swing at an older ball age.
