What Is a Partnership in Cricket?

A partnership in cricket is the number of runs scored by two batters from the moment they come together at the crease until one of them is dismissed. Partnerships are recorded for each wicket (a first-wicket partnership is between the two openers; a second-wicket partnership begins when the first wicket falls; and so on). The scorecard shows each partnership's runs and the balls faced. A large partnership is often the most important factor in a team's total — a single 150-run partnership can rescue a struggling innings or accelerate a run chase.

Partnership Run Rate

Partnership run rate is the average number of runs scored per over during a specific partnership. It is calculated as (partnership runs / balls faced) × 6. In a T20 context, a partnership run rate above 10 is highly aggressive; above 15 is exceptional. In Tests, a partnership run rate of 3 to 4 per over is normal; above 6 is very aggressive. The partnership run rate metric has become increasingly important in broadcasts as a way to measure the momentum within an innings without reference to the overall target.

Wicket Partnership Records

Partnership records are kept for each wicket position across all formats. The most historically significant are the first-wicket (opening) and fourth-wicket (middle order) partnerships, which most often define a team's innings total. First-wicket records are dominated by opening pairs like Hobbs and Sutcliffe (England, 1920s–30s) and Gordon Greenidge and Desmond Haynes (West Indies, 1980s). The record fifth-wicket partnership belongs to Mahela Jayawardene and Thilan Samaraweera for Sri Lanka. High-wicket (seventh, eighth, ninth, tenth) partnerships are celebrated for their impact on tail-end resistance.
