The Visual Assessment

The first assessment is visual — from the dressing room window or during pitch inspection before the toss:

  • Grass colour and cover: green grass means moisture and potential for seam and swing; brown/bare means dry and spin-friendly.
  • Cracks: hairline or large cracks indicate a dry, hard surface that will crack further — spinners love this on day 3–4.
  • Surface texture: a sheen on the surface indicates a hard, rolled pitch that will pace up; a dull, dusty surface is slower.
  • Moisture: visible moisture or darker colouring near the popping crease suggests soft surface — will assist seam early.

The Physical Tests

Before the match, captains and coaches often physically inspect the pitch:

  1. Bounce a ball: press a ball onto the surface — if it bounces quickly it is hard; if it bounces sluggishly it is soft.
  2. Scratch the surface with a thumbnail: if the surface comes up easily, it is soft and will deteriorate quickly.
  3. Look at the popping crease ends: worn areas from bowlers' footmarks indicate where rough will develop on day 2–4.

How Weather Affects the Pitch During a Match

  • Rain overnight: soft morning surface; seam movement common in first hour.
  • Hot sunshine all day: pitch dries and hardens; pace drops, batting becomes easier in afternoon.
  • Extreme heat: cracks develop faster; spin comes into play earlier than expected.
  • High humidity: assists conventional swing; clouds add pace to the bowler's swing.
  • Dew at night (day-night games): surface becomes damp — batting under dew is significantly easier than bowling.

What the Captain Looks for at Toss

At toss time, the captain makes their final decision based on all available information. The hierarchy:

  1. Weather: overcast with rain forecast? Bowl first — conditions are best now.
  2. Pitch moisture: damp surface? Bowl — seam movement assists.
  3. Pitch cracks: big pre-existing cracks on day 1? Bat now before they worsen.
