Powerplay Bowling Strategy: What Bowlers Do When the Field is In

Powerplay overs (when only 2 fielders can be outside the 30-yard circle) represent the biggest tactical challenge for bowling teams — with most fielders forced into close catching positions, boundaries are freely available. Powerplay bowling is the most technically demanding phase of limited-overs cricket for a seam bowler: with only 2 fielders permitted outside the 30-yard circle, the remaining 9 fielders must be inside the inner ring. The reason: a full-length delivery swings later in its trajectory (because it has more time in the air before reaching the batsman); it forces the batsman to make a larger foot movement (more risk of being trapped LBW if they miss); and full-length deliveries are harder to attack than short-pitched deliveries (the batsman must play the ball across the line of the stumps).
