What Is a Promoted Batter?
A promoted batter is a player sent in to bat higher than their usual position in the batting order. The decision is made by the captain based on match situation, conditions, or matchup advantages. Any player in the remaining batting lineup can be promoted at any point.
Common Reasons for Promotion
- Pinch hitter promotion — sending a big hitter up to attack the powerplay or tire bowling
- Matchup promotion — promoting a left-hander to disrupt an attacking off-spinner
- Acceleration promotion — team needs quick runs in final overs of a Test innings
- Injury or fatigue — a specialist batter is resting or injured and another takes their slot
- Nightwatchman — technically a demotion of specialists, a promotion of a tail-ender
Promotion in Limited-Overs Cricket
In T20 and ODI cricket, captains frequently send in their most explosive hitters during the powerplay (pinch hitter) or in the final overs. A captain might promote their number 7 (a clean hitter) above number 5 (a measured player) for the death overs if quick runs are the priority.
