Rahul Dravid: The Wall — Technique, Patience, and Legacy

Rahul Sharad Dravid — 'The Wall' — scored 13,288 Test runs at 52.31 in 164 Tests and is widely regarded as the most technically correct Test batter India has ever produced. His technique against pace, his defence, his concentration across long innings (he spent more time at the crease in Test cricket than any other batter), and his off-side play became the reference point for generations of Indian coaches.

Technical Perfection

Dravid's stance was side-on, head perfectly level, backlift toward second slip. His defensive technique was so sound that bowlers often gave up trying to dismiss him and simply waited. His off-drive — played with the full face of the bat, weight perfectly transferred through the ball — is considered the most correct example of the shot in modern Test cricket. He held the Indian record for the most minutes spent batting in Tests.

Abroad

Dravid's record overseas was extraordinary — he was one of the few Indian batters to consistently succeed in South Africa, England, Australia, and the West Indies. His 148 at The Oval in 2002 on a green wicket, 233 at Adelaide in 2003-04, and his partnerships on difficult surfaces overseas are considered among the most valuable innings an Indian batter has played.

Coaching Career

Dravid became head coach of India U-19 and subsequently the senior national team from 2021. Under his coaching India won the 2024 T20 World Cup. He stepped down after that triumph and was replaced by Gautam Gambhir.
