The reverse sweep and ramp (scoop) are unconventional batting shots that play in the opposite direction from where the fielding team has positioned itself — generating runs from areas of the field that are heavily defended for conventional shots, by using strokes that the fielders are not set for. The Reverse Sweep

The reverse sweep is a batting stroke where the batter switches their hands on the bat grip at the last moment and plays what would normally be a sweep shot (hitting the ball on the leg side) — but in reverse, hitting it toward the off side instead. A right-handed batter plays the reverse sweep to the right side (toward where fine leg would be for a left-hander). The shot exploits field placements by hitting toward unguarded areas: if the off side has fewer fielders than the leg side, the reverse sweep targets the off side. The Ramp (Scoop) Shot

The ramp shot (also called the scoop or Dilscoop — named after Tillakaratne Dilshan of Sri Lanka who popularised it in the 2009 World T20) involves the batter getting low and scooping the ball over or around the wicketkeeper's head for four or six behind the wicket. The batter steps outside the off stump, gets low, and scoops a full-pitched delivery upward, sending it over fine leg or over the wicketkeeper. The shot works because most T20I field placements have no fielder directly behind the wicketkeeper.

The Dilscoop was one of the most innovative batting strokes in cricket history when Tillakaratne Dilshan first used it extensively in the 2009 ICC World Twenty20. Playing quality pace bowlers at 140+ km/h and scooping them directly over their heads for sixes requires extraordinary technique and nerve — the ball is played against its natural direction (away from the bat face, upward, behind the wicketkeeper) from a full-pitched delivery that most batters would play forward defensively or drive. Dilshan's use of the shot generated massive runs through what had previously been a completely unguarded area of the field.

Why These Shots Have Become Common

Unconventional shots have proliferated in T20I cricket because fielding restrictions (powerplay two-fielder rule, death-over five-fielder limit) create gaps in specific areas. Bowlers and fielding captains set defensive fields to protect specific areas; unconventional shots target the areas NOT protected.
