What Is Reverse Swing?

Reverse swing is a phenomenon where an old, heavily worn cricket ball swings through the air in the opposite direction to what its seam position would conventionally produce. A bowler holding the ball for conventional outswing sees it swing inward (as an inswinger) — the opposite of what the batter expects. It occurs at high pace and is considered one of the most dangerous deliveries in cricket.

How Reverse Swing Works

Conventional swing relies on one shiny side and one rough side creating asymmetric airflow. Once a ball is around 30–40 overs old and both sides are roughed up — but one side is intentionally kept very rough while the other is dried out and lacquered with sweat — the aerodynamics reverse. The rough side now generates more airflow turbulence, pulling the ball toward it rather than away. The ball swings in the direction of the rough side rather than the smooth side.

Ball-tampering laws restrict how teams can condition the ball. Permitted: polishing with sweat or saliva. Banned: scratching, rubbing with foreign substances, applying anything artificial to the surface. The ICC enforces these laws strictly.

Why It Is So Hard to Play

Reverse swing is hardest to play because the batter sees a conventional seam position and expects the ball to behave normally — then it swings the wrong way at 85–90 mph. With barely 0.4 seconds to react from delivery to stumps, there is no time to readjust once the swing becomes apparent. Additionally, reverse swing often occurs later in the ball's flight, making it harder to pick up.

  • Dry conditions — arid climates (Indian subcontinent, Pakistan) dry out the rough side faster, enabling earlier reverse swing.
