Before Technology: The Umpire's Eye

Until 1992, all run-out decisions were made by the on-field umpire who had to simultaneously watch the fielder throw, track whether the throw reached the stumps, observe whether the batsman's bat or foot was grounded behind the crease, AND watch whether the bails were dislodged — all in under one second. The margin for error was enormous.

Third Umpire Introduction and Modern Technology

The third umpire was introduced in a Test between South Africa and India in 1992 — the first time video technology was used for a cricket decision. By 2026, broadcast cameras run at 200-1000 frames per second. At 1000fps, a run-out event lasting 0.1 seconds is captured in 100 individual frames — enough resolution to determine the exact millisecond the bail was dislodged relative to the bat grounding.
