What Is SA20?
SA20 (South Africa Twenty20) is South Africa's premier domestic T20 competition, launched in January 2023. Modelled on the Indian Premier League and owned in part by IPL franchise owners, SA20 replaced the old Momentum One-Day Cup as South Africa's flagship limited-overs competition and quickly established itself as one of the more competitive T20 leagues globally. The competition is run by Cricket South Africa (CSA) and features six franchises based in South Africa's major cities. Each franchise is partially owned by an IPL team — a structure that allows player pipeline and expertise sharing between the two leagues and ensures deep investment from the world's most financially powerful cricket ecosystem.
The Six Franchises
SA20's six franchises are: Joburg Super Kings (owned by Chennai Super Kings, CSK), MI Cape Town (Mumbai Indians), Paarl Royals (Rajasthan Royals), Pretoria Capitals (Delhi Capitals), Durban Super Giants (Lucknow Super Giants), and Sunrisers Eastern Cape (Sunrisers Hyderabad). The brand connections mean SA20 teams carry some of the IPL's global recognition to South African audiences — Joburg's yellow CSK branding, for instance, is immediately recognisable to cricket fans worldwide. The franchise structure means teams have access to IPL expertise in scouting, coaching, and marketing, accelerating the development of South African T20 cricket infrastructure.
Format and Season
SA20 takes place in January and February, during South Africa's summer — the same window as the Australian Big Bash League and often overlapping with international cricket series. Each team plays a double round-robin (10 matches each), with the top four qualifying for semi-finals and a final. Matches are held at South Africa's major cricket venues: Wanderers (Johannesburg), Newlands (Cape Town), Boland Park (Paarl), SuperSport Park (Pretoria), Kingsmead (Durban), and St George's Park (Gqeberha/Port Elizabeth). The January timing means it competes for screen time with the BBL and occasionally with England or India home tours.
Key Players and Stars
SA20 has attracted high-quality international talent from the start. Quinton de Kock, Faf du Plessis, Kagiso Rabada, and Anrich Nortje — South Africa's most recognisable players — all feature in the competition. International stars including Liam Livingstone, Devon Conway, Rashid Khan, and Sunil Narine have played in SA20 seasons. Notably, SA20 allows South Africa's cricket-country-eligible international players who opted out of Proteas contracts (like David Miller) to play without CSA contract restrictions, making the player pool wider than the national contracted squad. The competition has been a platform for young South African talent: Dewald Brevis, the teenage batting sensation, made a major impact in the first two seasons.
The First Seasons
The inaugural 2023 SA20 was won by Sunrisers Eastern Cape, defeating MI Cape Town in a close final at Newlands. Sunrisers retained the title in 2024, becoming the first back-to-back SA20 champions. Joburg Super Kings won in 2025 — CSK's franchise connection finally yielding a trophy in its first home competition. The early seasons were praised for high-quality cricket, strong crowds at South African venues (Newlands and Wanderers regularly sold out), and excellent broadcast production. The competition achieved significant viewership in India via its IPL franchise connections, essentially operating as a mid-season cricket fix for Indian audiences between IPL seasons.
Impact on South African Cricket
SA20's impact extends beyond the competition itself. The commercial revenue generated has strengthened CSA's financial position after years of instability. Domestic players earn fees comparable to international matches for the first time, reducing brain drain to other T20 leagues. The coaching and infrastructure investment from IPL parent teams has improved South African franchise facilities. Critically, SA20 has developed South Africa's T20 depth: players who perform in SA20 have moved into Proteas consideration. South Africa's emergence as a T20 force — reaching the final of the 2024 T20 World Cup — is partly credited to the quality of T20 competition their players now experience domestically. SA20's partnership model (ICC and IPL aligned) represents the most successful new franchise league of the 2020s.
