Sachin Tendulkar: Records, Career, and Legacy

Sachin Ramesh Tendulkar played international cricket from November 1989 to November 2013 — 24 years, 200 Test matches, 463 ODIs. He scored 15,921 Test runs and 18,426 ODI runs — the most in both formats by any batter. His 100 international centuries (51 in Tests, 49 in ODIs) remain one of sport's most celebrated statistical landmarks. In India, he is simply 'The Master'.

Career Records

Early Career: Debuting at 16

Tendulkar debuted for India against Pakistan in Karachi in November 1989, aged 16 years and 205 days. Facing Waqar Younis and Imran Khan — the greatest Pakistani pace attack of the era — he was hit on the nose by a Waqar short delivery and bled. He refused to leave the field. The image of a teenager refusing to yield against the world's most hostile bowlers became one of cricket's founding mythologies.

The 100 Centuries

Tendulkar's 100th international century came against Bangladesh in an Asia Cup match at Mirpur in March 2012. He had been stuck on 99 centuries for nearly a year — an agonising wait for Indian cricket fans and the media who tracked every innings. The century was scored in difficult circumstances and met with national celebrations. No other batter in history has scored more than 85 international centuries.

In April 1998, Tendulkar produced what many observers call the greatest ODI batting display of his career. Chasing 314 against Australia at Sharjah, he scored 143 not out in what became known as the Desert Storm match. In the preceding match, he had scored 134. His two innings in three days against McGrath, Warne, Fleming, and Kasprowicz — each in the 140s — were remarkable for their combination of power, placement, and reading of conditions that had a sandstorm interruption.

Rivalry with Shane Warne

The Tendulkar vs Warne contest was the defining rivalry of 1990s international cricket. Warne once described Tendulkar as his greatest challenge — he invented plans for weeks before tours to India specifically to combat him. Tendulkar countered by playing Warne predominantly off the back foot and through mid-wicket, denying Warne his preferred angle. Their duels — particularly in the 1998 India vs Australia series — were defining moments in both careers.
