Sachin Tendulkar's Records Explained: The Milestones of Cricket's Greatest

Sachin Tendulkar (born 1973 in Mumbai, Maharashtra) holds more cricket records than any player in the sport's history. His career statistics are the benchmark of excellence against which all subsequent batters are measured: 15,921 Test runs (the all-time record), 18,426 ODI runs (the all-time record), 51 Test centuries (the all-time record), 49 ODI centuries (surpassed by Virat Kohli's 50 in 2023), and 100 international centuries combined (the only cricketer to reach the milestone). He played international cricket from 1989 (age 16) to 2013 (age 40) — 24 years at the highest level.

100 International Centuries

Tendulkar's 100th international century — scored against Bangladesh at Mirpur in March 2012 — was one of cricket's most anticipated milestones. He had been stuck on 99 for 11 innings (scoring 94, 91, 76, 80, 41, 32, 56, 22, 57, 0, 53 without reaching a century — one of cricket's most discussed runs of form near a milestone). The 100th century came in an ODI; he scored 114. His total of 100 international centuries (51 in Tests, 49 in ODIs) remains cricket's most remarkable batting landmark — no other player has matched it. Virat Kohli surpassed Tendulkar's ODI-century record (49) in 2023, finishing with 54 ODI centuries, but his total international centuries (85: 30 Test + 54 ODI + 1 T20I) falls well short of 100.

First ODI Double Century

Tendulkar's 200 not out against South Africa at Gwalior in February 2010 was the first double century in ODI cricket history — in the format's 39-year existence to that point, no batter had scored 200. He scored 200 from 147 balls (strike rate 136), including 25 fours and 3 sixes, as India scored 401/3 in 50 overs. The innings broke a barrier considered by many as unbreakable — ODI pitches and bowling attacks were thought to prevent the sustained accumulation required for 200. Tendulkar's innings proved otherwise and was followed by Rohit Sharma's three subsequent doubles.

Why His Records May Never Be Broken

Tendulkar's records benefit from: (1) Duration — 24 years of international cricket, rare in a sport with year-round schedules and modern player management restricting career length. (2) Consistency — he averaged 50+ in Tests and 44+ in ODIs across the entire career; a single format specialist would need to be exceptional across two formats for 20+ years. (3) Volume — India's heavy international schedule from the 1990s–2000s meant Tendulkar played more matches than most players of his era. For current players to break his Test run record, they would need to average 60 runs per Test match for 16+ years of sustained Test cricket — theoretically possible for Kohli or Root, but the schedule and workload management that limits modern cricketers makes it extremely difficult.
