Sandpaper Gate 2018: The Ball-Tampering Scandal That Rocked Cricket

On 24 March 2018, during the third Test between South Africa and Australia at Newlands, Cape Town, TV cameras caught Australian opener Cameron Bancroft inserting what appeared to be a yellow object into his pocket after rubbing it on the ball. It was later confirmed to be sandpaper. The incident, known as Sandpaper Gate, triggered the largest scandal in modern Australian cricket history.

What Happened

At the lunch break, captain Steve Smith held a press conference and admitted Australia's 'leadership group' had planned to use sandpaper to rough one side of the ball to generate reverse swing. Bancroft had executed the plan on-field. Smith and vice-captain David Warner both acknowledged their roles. Smith's tearful press conference — saying he was 'not proud' and 'made a serious mistake' — was broadcast globally.
