A cricket scorecard is the complete statistical record of a completed innings — showing how every run was scored, how every wicket fell, and how every bowler performed. Reading a scorecard is the primary way cricket fans understand a match without having watched every ball. A typical Test scorecard shows: the batting section (one row per batsman), the bowling section (one row per bowler), fall of wickets (the score at which each wicket fell), and sometimes a partnership table. ODI and T20 scorecards follow the same format with fewer rows.

The Batting Section

Each batting row contains: Player name → Dismissal method (how they were out, e.g. 'c Root b Anderson' means caught by Root off Anderson's bowling) → R (runs scored) → B (balls faced) → 4s (number of fours hit) → 6s (number of sixes hit) → SR (strike rate: runs × 100 ÷ balls). The final two rows of the batting section show: Extras (wides, no-balls, byes, leg-byes, penalty runs — all extras credited to the batting team's total) and Total (total runs scored, along with wickets and overs, e.g. '347/8 (90.4 ov)' means 347 runs for 8 wickets from 90.4 overs). A not-out batsman's dismissal row shows 'not out' instead of a bowling combination.

The Bowling Section

Each bowling row contains: Bowler name → O (overs bowled) → M (maiden overs — overs where no runs were scored) → R (runs conceded) → W (wickets taken) → Econ (economy rate: runs ÷ overs). For example: 'Anderson 25-8-47-3' means Anderson bowled 25 overs, 8 of which were maidens, conceding 47 runs, taking 3 wickets. A bowling economy of 1.88 (47÷25) is exceptional for a Test bowler — for reference, an economy of 3.0 in Tests is considered average. In T20 scorecard bowling sections, no-balls and wides per bowler may also be shown.

The 'fall of wickets' section lists the score and over number at which each wicket fell — for example, '1-34 (Gavaskar, 12.3)' means the first wicket fell with the team score at 34, in the 12th over, 3rd ball, when Gavaskar was dismissed. Reading the fall of wickets shows whether the team collapsed rapidly (wickets falling in quick succession at similar scores) or recovered after a bad period (long gaps between wickets). It is the most information-dense part of a scorecard for understanding batting collapses and recoveries.

Partnership Table

The partnership table (not always included in basic scorecards) shows: Partnership number (1st wicket, 2nd wicket, etc.) → Batsman A → Batsman B → Runs added during the partnership → Balls faced during the partnership → Overs spanned. This allows fans to understand which batting partnerships were productive and which wicket periods were costly. A scorecard showing a first-wicket partnership of 195 followed by a second-wicket partnership of 12 immediately tells the story: the openers dominated, then the team collapsed. Partnership tables are most common in Test scorecards and detailed cricket websites like ESPNcricinfo.
