The NRR Formula

Net Run Rate (NRR) = (Total runs scored ÷ Total overs faced) − (Total runs conceded ÷ Total overs bowled). In words: your run rate scored, minus the run rate scored against you. A positive NRR means you scored faster than you conceded; a negative NRR means the opposite. Example: Team A scored 200 from 20 overs (run rate 10.0) and conceded 160 from 20 overs (run rate 8.0). NRR = 10.0 − 8.0 = +2.0. Simple when both innings are completed in the allocated overs. The complexity arises when a team is all out before completing their overs, or when a match is shortened by rain and DLS applies.

Handling All-Out Innings

The all-out innings rule is the most misunderstood part of NRR calculation. If a team is dismissed all out before using all their allocated overs, the full allocation of overs (not the overs actually used) is counted in the NRR calculation. Example: In a T20I, Team A is all out for 90 from 15 overs. For NRR purposes, Team A's innings is counted as 90 from 20 overs (the full T20 allocation), not 90 from 15 overs. This is because if they hadn't been all out, they would have had 5 more overs to score. The rule prevents teams from gaming NRR by collapsing early to produce an artificially low overs-faced number that would inflate their run rate. Result: being all out for 90 from 15 overs is worse for your NRR than scoring 90 from 20 overs deliberately (because the all-out innings uses the maximum overs denominator anyway).

NRR Worked Example

Group stage: 3 matches. Match 1: Your team scored 160 from 20 overs, conceded 120 from 20 overs (win). Match 2: Your team scored 180 from 20 overs, conceded 185 from 20 overs (loss). Match 3: Your team scored 140 from 18 overs (all out), conceded 141 from 19.3 overs (loss by 1 wicket). NRR calculation: Runs scored = 160 + 180 + 140 = 480. Overs faced = 20 + 20 + 20 (all-out in match 3, so use full 20 overs) = 60. Your run rate = 480/60 = 8.0. Runs conceded = 120 + 185 + 141 = 446. Overs bowled = 20 + 20 + 19.3 (overs used by opponents) = 59.3 overs. Note: 19.3 overs = 19 + 3/6 = 19.5 in decimal. Opponents' run rate = 446/59.5 = 7.496. NRR = 8.0 − 7.496 = +0.504.
