This creates unpredictable deviation that is genuinely difficult to play because even the bowler does not know exactly which way the seam will move.
Conditions That Favour Seam
Green pitches with grass covering — common in England, New Zealand, and South Africa — provide the irregular surface that allows the seam to grip and deflect. The moisture in the pitch and any green covering exaggerates seam movement. Dry, rolled pitches in the subcontinent (India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka) typically offer less seam movement because the surface is harder and more uniform.
Cutters
Cutters are deliveries where the bowler's fingers cut across the seam at the point of release, imparting side-spin that exaggerates lateral movement off the pitch. The off-cutter turns from off to leg (like an off-break); the leg-cutter turns from leg to off. Cutters are particularly effective when a pitch is breaking up or has soft spots.
